Photography: 04
Instructor: Solliday
Course Content:
Students will explore black and white photography as an art medium. Students will learn the technical skills that are necessary for developing and printing 35mm negatives. They will also learn how to operate a 35mm SLR camera and how to achieve several different exposure results. Students will learn to apply their knowledge of the elements and principles of design when composing a photograph. We will also be touching on the history of photography, career opportunities and the continually growing technical and artistic field of photography. Student self-expression as a means of creative communication is emphasized throughout the course. Students will be creating and maintaining a portfolio for assessment and exhibition.

Course Expectation:
Photography is considered an upper level course at Forest Park. Students are expected to have some knowledge about the elements and the principles of design before they begin this course. Photography is very demanding in terms of time spent working outside of the class. Students will be required to do the majority of their shooting on their own time. Students will have to present a minimum of 10 prints for their portfolio. This will require a great deal of time spent in the darkroom. Students will be given class time to work in the darkroom and they will also be allowed to come after school.

S.O.L.’s:
The following are the state SOL’s covered in this course: AH. 1,2,7,12,14; AF. 1,2,3,14;AA.3,4.

Photo Assignments:
Students will receive several shooting assignments throughout the course of the year. Each assignment will have a specific due date after which work will not be accepted. Students will be expected to follow the objectives listed for each assignment. All photo assignments will be posted on the school fusion website.

Notebooks:
Notebooks are VERY important in this class. Each student will be required to compile a well organized and complete record of exposure data, camera information, negatives and contact prints. Notebooks will be collected every quarter and students will receive a grade for them.

Evaluation and Grading:
Students will be given specific guidelines for every assignment given. For example, they will be told what type of subject matter to shoot the type of film to use, print size and techniques. Students will also receive grades for the following tasks:
Exposure records                 Developing film
Vocabulary quizzes               Tests
Prints                                      Contact sheets
Critiques                                Research projects

Make-up work:
Arrangements to make-up work missed due to an absence must be made within two days of returning to class. There are always situations in photography where problems arise. Film can get ruined any number of ways. Students will be required to do re-do assignments that do not work the first time. Students must communicate with me first! We can figure out the problem and find a solution so that it does not happen again. After that I will give the student a new due date by which to get the work done. If a student chooses not to re-do any assignments, they will receive an F for that project.
